All three investigative wings of the government —the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) — will have new heads in the new year.

Syed Asif Ibrahim, a 1977 batch IPS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is the first Muslim police officer with expertise in handling homegrown terrorist outfits, especially the Indian Mujahideen (IM), and cyber security, to be chosen as head of the IB.

The reins of the external intelligence unit, R&AW, will be in the hands of Alok Joshi, a 1976 batch Haryana cadre officer. Joshi has vast experience in handling Pakistan, Nepal and counter terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, selected the two officers. Joshi will start working as the officer on special duty (OSD) with R&AW chief Sanjeev Tripathi till December 31, to understand the functioning of the external intelligence wing.

Meanwhile, Ranjit Sinha, director-general of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), will take over as the new chief of CBI on December 1.
